The Napoleonic collection was accumulated over forty year period by a very advanced collector in Melbourne who spent two months each year in France upgrading and augmenting his collection of period artifacts. The collection was inherited by the collector’s granddaughter who has engaged Matheson’s to offer part of it for sale. Art will be a significant part of this sale. The inventory features eight works by eccentric Kentucky artist Henry Faulkner in his original frames. The paintings come from the estate in Ft. Lauderdale of a friend of Faulkner’s who was given the works by the artist personally. The paintings were discovered in trash bins destined for destruction. Boca Raton, FL - When asked about the results of the combination two day sale January 1 and January 7 J.K. Galleries owner Jay Kielstock replied simply, "The best ever." Coming from a veteran with over fifteen years of experience in the art and antiques business under his belt that’s no small statement. As with all J.K. HOLIDAY SPECIAL OFFERED BY FRED TAYLOR ON HIS BOOK "HOW TO BE A FURNITURE DETECTIVE" AND VIDEO "IDENTIFICATION OF OLDER & ANTIQUE FURNITURE"

Finding that special gift for the antique furniture hunter and collector on your gift list just got easier with the announcement by Fred Taylor that he is offering a Holiday Special on the combined purchase of his book "HOW TO BE A FURNITURE DETECTIVE" and his video "IDENTIFICATION OF OLDER & ANTIQUE FURNITURE."

Known around the country as an expert on older and antique furniture, Taylor’s two publications give basic "from the ground up" information about identifying a piece of furniture.

The video is a close up visual tour through the realm of hand made joinery, case construction, chair construction, identity of the age of beds by side rail fasteners, the evolution and dating of screws and nails and the use of veneer in American furniture. Each segment shows genuine examples of most subjects in addition to using line drawings to simplify some of the objects. The program ends with a brief overview of styles. This video is so fast paced you will need to use the "rewind" button often.

Taylor’s book, featuring illustrative line drawings and color and black and white photos, gives even greater depth and background to each subject and introduces additional material such as where to look for antique furniture, what to take with you in your search, including an adjusted attitude and then jumps into the basic identification tools and techniques outlined in the video. He then introduces additional topics such as how to determine the age of furniture glass, an expanded section on tool marks, a detailed checklist for determining the condition of a piece of furniture, a section on veneer and an easily understood wood identification guide. The book winds up with a color tour of furniture styles, a self test and a glossary. It’s an easy read, feeling more like a quiet conversation with an old friend than a dry scholarly tome about dusty antiques.

From now to the end of the year Taylor is offering both his book "HOW TO BE A FURNITURE DETECTIVE" and his video, "IDENTIFICATION OF OLDER & ANTIQUE FURNITURE" for the combined price of $39.95 which includes free shipping and complimentary gift wrapping if requested (for Holiday Priority Mail shipments add $6.50.) Just visit Taylor’s website at www.furnituredetective.com and print out the order form. For more information call (800) 387-6377.

STRONG INTERNATIONAL FLAVOR FOR ABERDEEN'S DECEMBER SALE

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
December 18, 2006

ABERDEEN-AUCTIONS
CLEARWATER, FL
Sale DECEMBER 7, 2006

Aberdeen-Auctions December sale had a decidedly Russian flair with several major lots going back home to Mother Russia.

CLEARWATER, FL - Aberdeen-Auctions of Clearwater, FL continued its string of auctions that feature an exotic mixture of European treasures and American antiques and arts. Auction owner Alex Turchak started the run with his first "Castle" sale in August 2006 with many articles from a Belgian castle mixed with English and French furniture and American art. The most recent sale on December 7 had some important Russian icons and art, selections from a of collection of American art pottery and a wide assortment of silver and jewelry from a number of consignors and estates, both European and American.
The 393 lot sale was carried online by eBayLive, attracting around 120 registered bidders to compete with the inhouse audience of 75 bidders and a large number of phone and absentee bids.

Top lot of the sale was an important work of art by French painter Edouard L. Dubufe (1820-1883), a renowned painter of the French and Russian courts of the 19th century. The subject of the portrait was the Russian Prince Victor P. Kochubey, an important minister in the ultimately futile reformation attempts of Czar Alexander I in the early 1800s. The painting, an artist signed oil on canvas, 37½ by 34¾in in frame, came with an attribution by the sitter. Presale estimate for the high quality, historically important work was $65,000/$75,000. Competition for the portrait generated 251 bids among two online bidders and one left bid. The left bid, offered by a private Russian collector, prevailed with a winner of $82,200 plus the fifteen percent buyer’s premium resulting a total sale price of $94,530.

Other Russian artifacts attracted less extensive but still respectable bidder attention. A bronze sculpture, "Cossacks at Campsite" by Russian artist Vassili Yacovlevitch Grachev,(1831-1905) sold for $2,990 including premium. A rare Russian icon of the Bogolubskaya Mother of God, circa 1760, hand painted with egg tempera on gesso on wood panel, showed architecture of the 15th century but was based on a miracle vision of the Virgin by Prince Andrei Bogolyubsky in 1157. The icon, in excellent condition, sold on online for $3,000 including the 20 percent online buyer’s premium and a pair of ornate Russian silver candlesticks, circa 1896 with maker’s mark, sold online for $1,560.
But only a portion of the sale was Russian. Two Oriental bronzes exceeded expectations. Two consecutive lots estimated at $300/$450 each went to the same online bidder in Hong Kong. A gilt bronze Buddha form the early 1800s, 8¾in tall went for $1,930 and a 19th century bronze Tibetan incense holder brought $1,200. Western Europe was represented by a bronze figure of a nude holding a bird, signed by La Faguays. The 21½in tall figure mounted on a marble base earned $2,280 online.

American work appeared in the sale in the form of an oil on canvas laid on board, 22 by 36in, by American painter Maximilen E. Sand. Entitled "Lake in the Catskill" the painting is considered to be an important luminist Hudson River School work. It sold online for $3,840. Art pottery sold solidly within estimates, especially Roseville. A Roseville Moss #290-6 two handle bulbous vase, pink and green in great condition, just over 6in tall, sold within estimate for $207, a Roseville Moss #775-6 two handle green urn vase, 6 ⅜ tall by 5½in across brought $173 and a rare Roseville Banada Green Flaring Vase, unmarked, in excellent condition.12⅜ tall by 6⅝in across brought a winner of $1,035.

CHOICE WORKS OF ART POWER AUCTION GALLERY OF THE PALM BEACHES DECEMBER SALE

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
December 21, 2006

AUCTION GALLERY OF THE PALM BEACHES
Sale December 4, 2006
West Palm Beach, FL

WEST PALM BEACH, FL - The three previous sales at Auction Gallery of the Palm Beaches in West Palm Beach, FL produced some eye opening surprises, primarily centered around Oriental art and porcelain. The December sale produced some surprises too for owner Brian Kogan but they were not about Oriental art. They were about Western art and a Palm Beach art gallery consignor.

Just prior to the sale over 160 lots were withdrawn after questions arose about the consignor’s right to sell the items. Preferring to stay on the conservative side Kogan withdrew all the lots related to the consignor until the questions can be resolved. The sale still featured a healthy inventory with over 300 lots on the bill of fare from a variety of estates in the South Florida area and several items from the Albert Peter Thomas Rochelle estate.

Unusual furniture sold surprisingly well in a sale focused on art. A 19 leg bronzed resin over steel dining table base, 103in by 60in, with an oval glass top, the "Stalagmite" table by American Paul Evans, circa 1974, sold over estimate at $5,175 including the fifteen buyer’s premium. An Evans glass top bronzed coffee table reached $4,025 and a four piece collection of coffee tables and end tables, tiled in polished chrome and brass, sold for $2,750, soaring over its $500/700 estimate.

The real excitement of the sale was reserved for three works by Indian born artist Avanash Chandra (1931-1991). He left India for England at age 25 in 1956 and within ten years the BBC had produced a documentary about him, the V&A bought his work and he had became the first Indian painter to have work displayed at the Tate Gallery, London. He moved his studio to New York in 1967 and by the time of his death in 1991 had held thirty two individual shows. When the Chandra works crossed the blocks five phone operators in the Gallery had their hands full with bidders. The first lot was an abstract composition with figures, watercolor on paper, 21 by 28in, signed "Avanash ’60." It sold on the phone to a New York bidder for $7,475. The second lot was a Jamaica landscape, oil on unframed canvas, 22¼ by 50in. Inscribed "Avanash Chandra, London, 1986" it sold over estimate on the phone to a different New York bidder for $19,550. The third lot was the charm. It was an abstract composition, oil on canvas, signed and dated "83" on the lower left. The 35¾ by 47½in unframed work went to the New York buyer of the earlier abstract for a sale high of $43,700, well above the $20,000/$25,000 estimate.

Two Salvador Dali works sold solidly within estimate. The "Grasshopper Child" etching, signed in pencil numbered 65/100, circa 1935, sold on an absentee bid of $9,200 and four color lithographs entitled "Visions Surrealiste" in a purple silk folio case. Each litho was signed in pencil and numbered 125/150. The set sold online for $4,500 including the twenty percent online premium.

A screen print on Perspex, "Untitled-Fragment 2" by Bridget Riley English, b. 1931, signed in pencil, 27 by 26½in, sold on the phone to a bidder in England for $7,475 and an oil on canvas landscape by American Samuel. S. Carr (1837-1908) entitled "Genre Scene with Children and Goat Cart," 12 by 18in in the original gesso cast frame, in need of cleaning and repair, sold for $8,050, more than double the $4,000 high estimate. After many years of storage in a garage in Palm Beach a bronze sculpture by Marius Jean Antonin Mercie. French (1845-1916) saw the light of day. Entitled "Gloria Victis" (Glory to the Defeated), 37in high in good condition it sold within estimate for $14, 950.
On final surprise came very late in the sale. An antique Persian Oushak carpet, 11ft 5in by 14ft 9in, estimated at $4,000/$6,000 brought $11,270 on the phone. There was one small oriental delight after all. A pair of intricately carved white jade plaques with dragon and scroll forms on rosewood stands, 2¾ by 2¼in and 2¼ by 4½in, sold online to bidder in Taiwan for $2,160, well over the $500/$700 estimate.

JADE FROM A NAPLES COLLECTION SELLS FOR A PREMIUM IN THE INTERNATIONAL MARKET

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
December 22, 2006

AUCTIONS NEAPOLITAN
Sale November 14/21, December 12, 2006
Naples, FL

Auctions Neapolitan of Naples, FL held a wide ranging three day sale in November and December that sparked international interest in quality jade and other Oriental items.

NAPLES, FL - Neapolitan Auctions owner Kathleen Pica of Naples, FL was excited about the results from her recent three day sales event that saw bidders from China, Hong Kong and Taiwan competing with local bidders for items from the 1200 lot inventory she assembled for this auction. The sale was conducted online by LiveAuctioneers.com and in person in the auction facility on 1st Avenue South in Naples.

Each of the three days of the sale had a significantly different tone. The first day, November 14, featured a number of lots from a significant collection of jade artifacts originally from China. Until recently the collection was privately housed in Naples. The second day, November 21, showcased a variety of antiques and silver from an estate in Port Charlotte and the final day, December 12, was "clean up" day according to Pica, picking up miscellaneous lots from a number of sources, providing bidders with lots of unique opportunities for holiday gifts. The opportunity to bid attracted 920 approved bidders registered for the online portion of the sale competing against 200 registered in person in the Gallery.

The top lot of the sale crossed the block on the first day of the sale. A Ching Dynasty (1644-1912) jade scepter created quite a stir in the online market and on the phone bidding lines. An online bidder from Taiwan battled it out with phone bidders from China, and California and other online bidders from China, Hong Kong and Japan. Pica noted, "Oriental buyers are especially favorable to the lighter colored jade pieces. They like the whites and light greens." The 15¾in scepter in light green jade certainly fit the bill and included carvings depicting a man and his servant traveling. That was a good omen because the scepter will soon make its way to Taiwan going to the online bidder there for $13,915 including the buyer’s premium of fifteen percent. The original presale estimate was for $1,200/1,400.

Other significant jade lots included a light green carved jade brush wash, 5 by 4in, with a raised center medallion. Estimated at $150/$200, the elegant bowl garnered a winning bid of $4,025, again from an Oriental buyer. A 4in Chinese carved jade pants coupe with fitted wooden stand, light green with brown traces, estimated at $300/$400, cleaned up at $3,795 and a Chinese carved white jade belt buckle sold for $3047. Pica said, "The jade was good quality but nothing real special. The market is just ready for good quality jade work."

The second day of the sale held its own with a Japanese two handled signed bronze urn. The 19¾in urn was elaborately decorated with large flowers, leaves and branches with details to the petals and stamin. The urn was mounted on a three dolphin base resting on a plateau with bird perched on a branch as a finial. Estimated at $600/$800, it sold to an online bidder for $2,760. A seldom seen Meissen porcelain harlequin figure, 9in tall sold over estimate online at $873.

The final day of the sale saw a vintage Japanese small sword, 26in long, with a leather wrapped handle and a stylized lotus leaf Tsuba, estimated at $300/$400 bring in a winner of $625.

Pica feels that the international contacts and the quality of merchandise she is attracting in Naples allows Auctions Neapolitan to effectively offer auction services that compete favorably with the larger houses on the East coast. Her next auction is scheduled for January. JACK EUBANKS AUCTION
BREVARD, NC
Sale January 13, 2007

Jack Eubanks Auction opens the 2007 season with an eclectic sale that will appeal to almost everyone on January 13.

BREVARD, NC - Jack Eubanks Auction will host the most wide ranging sale of its ten year history on January 13 in Brevard, NC. The sale will feature a 500+ lot inventory complied from a number of both living and deceased estates from North Carolina and one from Florida. One prominent estate is that of Betty H. Austin, a renowned Tuscaloosa, AL artist who taught at the University of Alabama and Mississippi Southern University. Mrs. Austin was a member of the exclusive art society the Salmagundi Club of New York and exhibited her paintings at the "American Painters in Paris Exhibition" in 1976 and presented one woman shows in Montgomery, AL, New York and Manzillo, Mexico. She was inducted in the "World’s Who’s Who of Women" in 1982. The sale will offer a number of her original portraits and landscapes. Other works of art by Florida Highwayman Sam Newton, oil on board, Denholm Davis (1876-1950) oil on canvas, Whitney Myron Hubbard, American (1875-1965), mixed media and Reynold Henry Weidenaar, American (1915-1985), lithograph, will also cross the block.

The work by Weidenaar consists of three lithographs, two progressive artist’s proofs and a final copy labeled "200/4." The subject of the work in progress proofs is the "Train Carrier, Ludington." The mixed media work by Hubbard has a label on the reverse that identifies it as "Stirling Creek, Greenport, L.I." The sale will also feature original works by North Carolina artists Ann DeGara and locally renowned artist Helene Andrews. In addition a number of original circus posters from 1940s and 1950s winter camps in the Sarasota, Fl area will be shown.

An interesting assortment of non-art lots will help keep everyone’s attention. A wide variety of contemporary face jugs will be offered along with numerous examples of Southern pottery, Pisgah Forest Pottery from Ardon, NC, a variety of Cherokee baskets and mobile in the style of designer Alexander Calder. In addition there will be a U.S. Navy captain’s hat accompanied by his original belt , buckle and epaulettes, all contained in the original metal carrying case from the late 19th or early 20th century. A small number of select firearms will cross the block including a nice Luger P-08, a Model 1896 Broomhandle Mauser, a 1917 U.S. Army Colt .45 auto and an 1856 .44 Star revolver. Jack Eubanks is a licensed Federal Firearms dealer and all regulations will be followed. There will also be a 148 piece set of Bernina crystal tableware.

The extremes of the sale can be found in two lots. One is from an estate that originated in Upstate New York. The owners retired to North Carolina and brought with them a number of 19th century farm primitives. The most interesting is a wooden treadmill about the right size for a large dog or goat, attached to a crank that operates a churn, presumably to make butter. At the other end of the spectrum is a 1979 Roll Royce Silver Shadow II with 27,000 miles on the clock. This is the only lot in the entire sale that will be sold with a reserve. The minimum bid on the Rolls is $25,000.

Eubanks expects to have the entire catalog of the sale posted on the website by January 1, 2007. Check http://www.jackeubanks.com/ for updates. Preview for the sale is by appointment at the Auction’s gallery at 220 South Broad Street in Brevard, NC. Auction begins at 9 AM. See the website for directions. Phone bids and absentee bids are welcome. Seating for around 160 bidders can be reserved by email at info@jackeubanks.com or by phone at (828) 884-7889.

SOME "VERY EARLY" AMERICANA AT A-1 AUCTION

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
November 9, 2006

A-1 AUCTION
ORLANDO, FL
Sale December 17

A-1 Auction of Orlando will offer a prized collection of Native American and Pre-Columbian art and artifacts.

ORLANDO, FL - Doug and Paula White, owners of A-1 Auction in Orlando, FL will offer their fifth sale of the year comprised entirely of items from the deceased estate of a major Florida agricultural family from the East Coast. The sale, to be conducted December 17 at the Maitland Civic Center in Maitland, FL just north of Orlando, will feature a wide selection of Native American and pre-Columbian art and artifacts collected over many years by Bette and Mike Steflik of Bunnell and Flagler Beach.

The Stefliks became interested in antiques and cultural collecting in the 1960s and traveled the world over seeking new additions to their treasure, acquiring articles from many cultures over forty plus years. Mrs. Steflik was so engrossed in the cultural aspects of their collecting that she often dressed in Native American costumes and jewelry for her daily routine. She was especially fond of Seminole dress. This sale will focus on North and Central American cultures with artifacts dating as far back as possibly 9,000 years to as recently as 1945.

Doug White, while not an expert on the subject of Native America, does have a background in the subject having grown up in the Memphis area and participating in many amateur archeological digs of Woodlands culture sites from 900 to 1,200 years old in Tennessee. He said, "This can only be classified as a specialty sale and we will present it all - the good, the bad and the ugly without reserve."

The oldest items in the sale will be selected Clovis points made all over North America by Paleoindian hunters. The Clovis point, considered to be the oldest projectile point in North America, was a breakthrough in weapon technology. Its use spread across the entire continent. The points in this sale could be anywhere from 3,000 to 9,000 years old. Among the newest items to be offered is a group of 26 of the original 30 painted images of Native Americans contained in a portfolio created by five Kiowa artists known as the Kiowa Five, trained at the University of Oklahoma in the late 1920s. The listed artists include Mopope, Hokaeh, Tsatoke, Auchiah and Smokey.

Artifacts that fall the between the oldest and youngest will include a 20in monolithic granite ceremonial axe from the Upper Mississippi Valley from perhaps 1,500 to 2,000 years old, a pottery effigy water bottle from the Woodlands culture, a Zuni cottonwood crow doll, a carved Cherokee ceremonial mask, Zuni black on white pottery, lots of Zuni and Navajo jewelry and perhaps the newest article of the sale, a scene of Plains Indians by western artist Frank Miller with a dedication letter dated 1945.

White said he expects this sale to present an excellent opportunity for entry level collectors to have a look at and acquire some of what a pair of dedicated, experienced collectors spent much of lifetime seeking.

The 300 lot sale starts at noon on December 17 and is expected to last approximately four hours. The Civic Center has seating for 275 and reserved seats can be secured by phone or email. Absentee and phone bids are welcome. The preview will December 11-15 at the A-1 offices located at 2042 N. Rio Grande Ave. Suite E, Orlando, FL and on December 17 until 10:00AM at the Civic Center. For more information call Doug or Paula White at (407) 839-0004, visit the website at http://www.a-1auction.net/ or email to a-1auction@cfl.rr.com. A-1 will follow this sale with a sale in January consisting of African art from the Steflik estate.

ORIENTAL SURPRISE AND FLORIDA ART PACE SALE

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
November 1, 2006

AUCTION GALLERY OF THE PALM BEACHES
Sale October 9, 2006
West Palm Beach, FL

WEST PALM BEACH, FL - Auction Gallery of the Palm Beaches in West Palm Beach, FL continued its string of hugely successful sales with another blockbuster event on October 9. For the third sale in a row auction owner Brian Kogan produced a real surprise from the Orient to keep the audience on their toes as well as some local Florida art treasures that were very well received.

Kogan said, "We are fortunate to have a number of retired executives in this area who have collected Orientalia for a very long time. Now some of them are thinning out their collections and we see some very fine examples." The star of the show this time came very early in the 500 lot sale. It was a pair of Chinese ivory inset polychrome double gourd shaped wall plaques. Each featured a scene of elephants with associated Chinese figures and had carved wooden bats on each side at the pinched waist of the gourds. Measuring 24in high by 14½in wide, the plaques were missing some ivory insets and applications but they were in overall good condition. The presale estimate for the pair of late 19th century plaques was a modest $800 - $1,000. Online bidders through Liveauctioneers.com quickly dominated the bidding sending it above estimate before the auction opened. The winner was an online bidder in Taiwan, posting a sale high winning bid of $26,400 including the twenty percent online buyer’s premium. Kogan commented that many Oriental lots are being acquired by bidders from the Far East and the articles are being returned to their home site.

That was the case also for some important works of Florida art. Two early works by Albert E. "Beanie" Backus, the mentor of the famed Florida Highwaymen of the 1950s, crossed the block in the fourth hour of the sale and bidders were ready. An oil on board "Shoreline with Pier and Boats, Near Vero Beach" inscribed verso by the artist "For Harry, Albert E. Backus 1940", 16 X 19in, sold on the floor to a Florida collector for $13,800. A larger 25 X 30in oil on canvas, signed lower right and verso signed and titled "Indian River" by the artist also sold within estimate to the same bidder for $24,150.

Furniture sold surprisingly well. A three piece English inlaid maple and cherry locking display cabinet with eight glass doors and four drawers, 80in high X 93in wide, sold online for $6,000, above the $2,500 - $3,500 estimate. A set of eight Restoration antique carved walnut dining chairs, two arms and six sides, also sold above estimate on the floor at $2,300. An oak Art Deco dining table and a set of eight matching oak chairs, all by German designer Thomas Pein did not sell during the auction but a private sale ensued later for $8,500 for the set.

Several outstanding lots brought outstanding prices. A 29in tall bronze figure of a crouching contemplative lady dated 1958, monogrammed "TM" sold above estimate for $4,025. A Meissen antique hand painted porcelain plaque of a penitent Magdalene brought $4,600 against the estimate of $1,500 - $1,800 and a silver Judaica double handled spice cup with inset paste and semi precious stones, bearing the Ten Commandments in Hebrew and an unknown language, 12¼in high, quadrupled the estimate, selling online for $2,040.

The December 4 sale at Auction Gallery of the Palm Beaches will feature items from the Rochelle Thomas estate, a Palm Beach art gallery and a good selection of decorative arts. For more information call (561) 805-7115 or visit the website at http://www.agopb.com/.

THE SALE OF THE COLLECTORS COLLECTIONS

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
October 19, 2006

MATHESONS’ AA AUCTION
Sale September 30 – October 1
Melbourne, FL

Famous estates provide collectors’ treasures at Matheson’s AA Auction in Melbourne, FL.

MELBOURNE, FL - Mathesons’ AA Auction owners Lloyd and Jan Matheson of Melbourne, FL had touted their upcoming September 30-October 1 sale as the one to attend to get some of what serious collectors collected. The sale featured inventory from the collections of Phoebe Morris, the grand dame of charity balls in Miami, fashion designer Bob Bugnand who designed outfits for Elizabeth Parke Firestone and Jacqueline Kennedy, Hanna Hale, an artist and sculptor from Woodstock, NY and items from the former home of rock diva Cher.

The two day sale featured 890 lots and Auction Manager Carey Lucas said, "It was the most fantastic sale I have ever seen. Unbelievable." She said it will take her two weeks to do all the paperwork and make all the shipping arrangements. It could easily take that long because she will have to ship items around the world to the many out of town and foreign bidders who were successful buyers. The Mathesons’ facility had two hundred bidders and standing room only in the room each day and ten phone lines in operation with as many as seven in use at one time. Lloyd Matheson called the entire mammoth sale which ended after the 9½ hour session on Sunday.

Art was one of the big attractions. The top lot of the sale was a maritime coastal scene by Holland born Anthony Thieme (1888-1954) who emigrated to the United Sates in the 1920s with studios in Rockport, MA and St. Augustine, FL. The 30 X 36in O/C of small fishing vessels at anchor sold within estimate to a private collector in the room for $22,425 including the fifteen percent buyer’s premium. A pastoral scene, O/C 18½ X 31in, of a flock of sheep, the shepherd and his trusty dog by Belgian artist Cornelius van Leemputen (1841-1902) sold for $7,763 and a 54 X 40 inch painting in the Cuzco School style of Peru went to Washington, DC for $6,900. A pair of oil on board works by American Henry Faulkner (1922-1981) fit into the market nicely. A scene of a garden pathway sold for $5,750 and a religious figure made $4,312. Two small works by American David Burliuk (1882-1967), both oil on board, sold to a bidder in Moscow for $3,163 and $2,875.

As in most well stocked auctions Mathesons’ had a few surprises. A signed Bergman Orientalist bronze lamp, estimated at $8,000 sold on the phone to a buyer in Germany, closing at $13,225. A half ship’s model of the SS Barrowmore of Liverpool was ensconced in a mirrored case giving the impression of a full ship. The 107in long model sold to a West Coast Florida buyer with a bid of $10,925 and another model, the SS Santa Rosa, built by Laird Brothers of the Birkenhead Iron Works, also stayed in Florida, going to an East Coast Florida collector for $5,750.

An elaborate large early 19th century Venetian mirror from the Bob Bugnand collection, 66H X 47in W, sold to a Florida dealer for $7,474 and a marble top 18th century kingwood French commode with ormolu mounts made the same price.

From Cher’s former mansion came a 52in high carved wooden oriental warrior figure, $5,175, a red lacquered 53in tall standing Buddha, $4,313 and a 14th century Thai bronze Buddha, 60in tall, $4,025.

When it was finally over Lloyd Matheson said, "People at this sale were interested in buying investment quality items."

The sale of the 10th featured a large collection of Lladro, art, jewelry and crystal and glass including Steuben, Lalique and Waterford.

Every registered bidder received a coupon worth $25 off their purchase at the next J. K. Galleries sale in the new facility in the International Jewelers Exchange in Boca Raton.

Tiffany Furnaces, Inc," 15in tall, sold within estimate to an online bidder at $3,120. A three part 14in tall signed Tiffany favrile lamp made $1,800 online and a 12in tall signed ribbed favrile vase sold online for $1,440.

SUMMER SIZZLER - PART II AT AUCTIONS NEAPOLITAN

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
August 11, 2006

AUCTIONS NEAPOLITAN
Sale August 22, 2006
Naples, FL

NAPLES, FL - Auctions Neapolitan owner Kathleen Pica has announced the second portion of her SUMMER SIZZLER SALE to be held at the auction gallery in Naples on Tuesday August 22. The first part of the two part sale was held July 18 and Pica said, "The last one was a good mid summer Florida sale but this one will be better." She has gathered around 400 lots from a number of SW Florida estates with special attention to art. "All of the material is new and fresh to the market. It hasn’t been seen in this area before."

One of Pica’s favorite entries in the inventory is a leaded glass window from the late 19th or early 20th century depicting a religious scene of an angel in conversation with a mortal. The work is very much in the manner of La Farge, American (1835-1910), but there is no attribution as yet. The window stands 72in tall and is 35in wide. It appears to depict the Annunciation of Archangel Gabriel to the Virgin Mary. Also included in the sale will be an engaging portrait of a young girl reading a book before a large open window. From the mid to late 19th century, the oil on canvas, 13½ X 17in, is unsigned but has a possible attribution to Johan Georg Meyer Von Bremen, German (1813-1886) and an important work by an artist of local area interest, Maximo Cortina, will be presented.

An ornately decorated late 19th century Russian crystal chandelier, hanging 38in high by 20in wide, will cross the block as will several 19th century carousel horses, artwork by Jerome Myers (1867-1940) and Edwin Koch, a Heronde rock salt figurine and a number of Art Deco smalls.
Bidding will be available online through LiveAuctioneers.com, by phone, by absentee or left bid or in person at the auction gallery at 1100 1st Ave. S, Naples. Reserved seating for 150 is available by phone or in person. The sale begins at 5:30PM on Tuesday August 22. Preview is available beginning Friday, August 18 from 12 - 5, Saturday August 19 from 12 - 4 and Tuesday, August 22 12 to 5pm. TWO IN A ROW FOR AUCTION GALLERY OF THE PALM BEACHES

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
September 21, 2006

AUCTION GALLERY OF THE PALM BEACHES
Sale August 21, 2006
West Palm Beach, FL

For the second sale in a row Brian Kogan, owner of Auction Gallery of the Palm Beaches, managed to assemble an inventory that produced some eye opening prices, some chuckles and some quizzical looks.

WEST PALM BEACH, FL - The early summer sale was a night of major surprises and Kogan followed up by gathering 375 lots from three local counties and the Palm Beaches to provide a memorable late summer sale on August 21. Approximately 125 registered bidders were in the room and 300+ bidders registered to participate online through LiveAuctioneers.com. Another 100 people phoned in their bids.

The sale started on a quick beat with the first lot, a KPM porcelain oval dish with hand painted floral border. The 10 1/3in wide dish had an underglaze scepter mark as well as the KPM stamp. In overall very good condition with some very minor wear to gilding it generated 30 bids among floor bidders and online bidders. Estimated at $250 $350, the dish sold for online for $1,680 including the buyers premium. A few lots later the biggest surprise of the night crept across the block. It was an antique American hand-painted glass plaque with Wave Crest like sailboats. Mounted in a brass frame, the plaque was approximately 10in in diameter and in the frame it measured 12½in wide. The unmarked plaque was estimated to sell for a modest $40 to $60 but it quickly ignited an online bidding war, closing with a winner of $2,640 including premium online.

But the real porcelain star of the sale was yet to come. A Royal Vienna porcelain plaque with a provenance from the American Embassy in Havana was signed by Wagner and featured attractive maidens within an elaborate gilt border on the 13in diameter circular plaque. It was enclosed in a 21¼in painted gold frame. Entitled "Entflohen" with an under painted Royal Vienna mark on back, the plaque also had an impressed KPM and scepter mark. Estimated at $10,000 - $15,000, the porcelain plaque sold on the phone to a collector in California for $23,000.

All the interest was not focused on European porcelain however. A pair of Oriental lots did well. A 77in high large Chinese carved and gilded shrine with altar deities and multiple removable figures. The gilded and red lacquer artifact sold on the phone to a bidder in Hong Kong for $4,600. A Chinese Zhou Dynasty bronze musical bell cast with numerous incised and embossed decorations on the surface had surmounted dragons on the sides. Mounted on a modern wooden plinth, this bell from China’s longest lasting dynasty sold in the room for $1,495.

Silver was a favorite of the audience. A set of six Georg Jensen early hammered silver sherbets, marked on base with the early oval Georg Jensen mark and "Copenhagen" in an oval circle with GJ mark 830, 3¾ in high, sold above estimate at $4,025 and a Tiffany & Co. sterling silver Bamboo 57 piece flatware service went over estimate at $3,450.

GOOD RESULTS FOR WINTER SALE IN JULY AT PROFESSIONAL APPRAISERS AND LIQUIDATORS ON JULY 29, 2006

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
August 10, 2006

PROFESSIONAL APPRAISERS AND LIQUIDATORS
CRYSTAL RIVER, FL
SALE OF JULY 29, 2006

Crystal River, FL – The turnout for the Professional Appraisers and Liquidators sale on July 29 in Crystal River verified owner Charlie Fudge’s premonition that this would be a Winter Sale in July. The 300 seats in the air conditioned 7,500 sq. ft. auction hall were quickly reserved and claimed and the auction started with standing room only. Auction representative Diane Fudge said, "I gave out 250 bidder numbers before we got started. Forty of those were for new dealers registering with us for the first time."

Several lots of fine estate furniture added some spice to the sale. The star of the sale was a solid wood bedroom made by Ethan Allen in the 1980s featuring a four post canopy bed with scalloped rails in the canopy, a double pillow top Beautyrest mattress and boxspring set, a large triple dresser with beveled mirror, two nightstands and gentleman’s chest. Matching the base set was a French marriage chest with raised panel doors and shell carving on the apron and a matching raised panel two door entertainment center on cabriole legs. The entire set originally retailed at Ethan Allen for over $20,000. The base set and the two matching pieces were sold as three separate lots but all three were won by a dealer from the east coast of Florida for a combined total price of $5,610 including the buyer’s premium. Another modern piece also did very well. It was six piece mahogany wall unit bookcase, entertainment center and display case combination made by Drexel featuring lots of options for lighting and shelf arrangement. It brought a winner of $2,200 including premium.

Older and antique furniture held its ground. An elegant Victorian marble top display cabinet with inlaid doors and drawers, jeweled leaded glass panels and a beveled back mirror sold above estimate at $1,485 and a 19th century Hepplewhite mahogany flip top game table with satinwood inlay made over four times the estimate at $1,320. An early century tiger maple lift top mule chest or raised blanket chest with two lower drawers, pegged construction and turned and tapered feet, possibly from Pennsylvania, went to a bidder on the phone in Alabama for $1,155 while a 12 foot long cherry banquet table with stick and ball ends and barley twist legs, circa 1880, sold in the room for $990. A southern lift top sugar chest from Kentucky or the Tennessee Valley earned $715. However, six nicely grained mid century Empire style chairs could muster only $22 each. Fudge said, "You can’t give away chairs these days." But that was not entirely accurate. There was one chair that fostered some lively bidding. It was a "bicycle" chair manufactured by Charles P. Limbert Co. of Grand Rapids, still bearing the Limbert tag used in 1903. In spite of needing a replacement leather panel in the back, this Arts and Crafts artifact found a new Florida based owner at $1,100. From around the same period in time a five stack Globe-Wernicke walnut bookcase in excellent condition made $880.

There were a few pleasant surprises in the smalls department. A Hummel figurine, Whitsuntide #163, TM1 brought $550, We Wish You Were Here #600 TM7 made $660 and Culprit Table Lamp #44a TM4 sold for $605. A pair of Chinese export bowls, 9¾ in diameter with floral and animal decorations eclipsed the $200 estimate by closing at $742 and an antique Currier & Ives print entitled "Polly & Kitty", 14½ X 17½in, brought an over estimate winner of $302.
Fudge said, "What was good was very good" in spite of remarking that prices seemed to be slightly off what would be expected in a seasonal winter sale. But phone activity was heavy and bidder interest and attendance was high so overall he said, "It was an excellent winter sale – for July." AUCTION GALLERY OF THE PALM BEACHES
WEST PALM BEACH, FL
Sale June 26, 2006

The third anniversary sale of Auction Gallery of the Palm Beaches on South Dixie Highway in West Palm Beach on June 26 was a night of fun, strong prices and several surprises according to auction co-owner Brian Kogan. "It was a nice evening and lots of people had lots of fun."

The event featured lots from the estate of Palm Beach antiquarian and third generation English porcelain dealer Alfred Peter Rochelle-Thomas, a French Art Deco perfume bottle collection from the estate of New York artist Arthur Holland, French and Italian furniture from a Miami home and American furniture from a Plantation area home.

The biggest surprise of the sale was a pair of porcelain bowls from the reign of the fifth emperor of the Chinese Ch’ing dynasty, known as Chia Ch’ing, 1796-1820. Bearing the seal of the reign, the two red ground finely painted bowls, 4in high X 8 1/8in wide, with scenes of Chinese children at play, were estimated at $500/$1,000 the pair. Fierce online competition quickly exceeded the high estimate, closing at $26,400, including buyer’s premium, from a regular auction house bidder. The bowls will eventually be sent to Hong Kong.

Another very pleasant surprise appeared in the form of a French display cabinet, circa 1900, with a drop front desk in the center section and curved glass display areas. The kingwood cabinet, 65in high and 63in wide, was decorated with ormolu ribbon and floral swags and caryatids that had been added after the original manufacture. Estimated at $6,000/$8,000, a local bidder and New York buyer went head to head until the New Yorker won it with an offer of $20,700.

And American artifacts were also in demand. A pair of 18th century gilt wood convex mirrors with eagle finials and finely gilt carved scrolling additions was warmly received in the house. The 40in tall fixtures had some paint faults and loosened finials and parts but were estimated at $5,000/$7,000 in spite of the deterioration of the probable original mirrors and the addition of electrified candelabra. That was no deterrent to determined bidders who competed the pair to a close of $17,250.

Art was well represented at the sale. An oil on canvas, 36in X 54in, with no visible signature but with a strong attribution to English artist Edward Mathew Ward, 1816 – 1879, depicted a scene in Exchange Alley from the South Sea Bubble in 1790 when the financial bubble of South Seas financial speculation burst. It went to a local floor bidder for $14,950 and an 18th century Spanish or Dutch School Old Master oil on copper brought $3335.

Even a bird got into the act. A 17in tall Majolica pottery hanging wall bracket with a parrot figure and an illegible maker’s mark, in fair condition with some loss to the feathers, estimated at $100/$150, sailed off to a winner of $2,530 with premium.

The off-peak season auction was well attended with over 100 bidders on the floor, 300 registered online with LiveAuctioneers and over 100 phone bids. Kogan reported the online version of the sale came off without a hitch. For more information call (561) 805-7115 or visit the website at http://www.agopb.com/. The next Art and Antique Auction is scheduled for Monday, August 21, 2006 at 5:00 PM.
