Auction Gallery of the Palm Beaches will offer the personal property of the Rubenstein’s, owners of the Madison Galleries.

(West Palm Beach, FL) Auction Gallery of the Palm Beaches will conduct a single owner, two session auction on January 10th and 11th, 2011 offering the personal property of Mrs. Florence Rubinstein and the late Mr. Irving Rubinstein. The Rubinstein’s were the owners of the renowned Madison Galleries in New York City before retiring to Delray Beach. The auction will feature over 600 lots of antiques, fine art, and objects d’art that were previously in their home at 20 Sutton Place South in Manhattan.

This collection was amassed over seventy years of dealing and collecting by the Rubinstein’s. Their eye for antiques is clearly evident in the fine selection of items offered. Each object has a quality in execution and detail that is a testament to the Rubinstein’s’ discerning taste.

Some of the highlights are a group of Russian bronzes including a very large group by Lanceray, a collection of Russian enamels, over 75 lots of silver, a collection of very fine Japanese and Chinese ivories and bronzes, 19th century figural bronze and Baccarat crystal vases, a Satsuma collection, a fine collection of 17 Pietra Dura plaques, three paintings by Johann Berthelsen (1873-1972 American), a 19th century Pietra Dura inlaid cabinet on stand, a collection of fine English porcelain service plates, a fabulously large Meissen dog, 273 piecss of Tiffany sterling flatware set in the “Castilian” pattern and an amazing Tiffany glass vase 14” high, pair of Royal Sevres vases, 18th and 19th century Chinese porcelain and jade objects including an impressive 18th century covered vase, coral carvings, a collection of European bronzes, European paintings and much more.

This auction will be an excellent opportunity for collectors and dealers to bid on an array of fine quality antiques and art that are fresh to the market, after seventy years of collecting.

Madison Galleries was founded by Florence’s father Mr. Abe Ash in the 1930’s and its first location was on Madison Avenue in mid-town. As the gallery became more successful in the 1950‘s, Ash branched out and opened two locations in Atlantic City and expanded the Manhattan gallery to 45th and 5th Avenue. As Madison Galleries continued to grow with new connections in Europe, the gallery became too small and re-located to 56th Street and 2nd Avenue.

By the time Irving and Florence Rubinstein took over the running of Madison Galleries from Abe Ash, Madison Galleries had become recognized as one of the major retailers in the antique industry. Their business was expanding and their reputation as a leading supplier of antiques to the retail and antique auction trade was flourishing. Madison Galleries became a recognized destination for collectors, designers, and decorators. In the 1980’s, the gallery re-located to 840 Broadway and operated there until 1995 when the Rubinstein’s retired to South Florida. Mr. Rubinstein passed away in 2004 and Mrs. Rubinstein now in her 90’s has chosen to auction her extensive collection with Auction Gallery of the Palm Beaches Inc.

Civil War and World War II items mix with antique furniture and medical history in Brevard, NC September 25.

(Brevard, NC) Veterans’ memories and memorabilia of the Civil War and World War II from members of the same family will be the highlights of the Jack Eubanks Auction scheduled for September 25 in Brevard, NC. The sale will feature items belonging to Civil War soldier George Sharp (1844-1930) and his grandson, China-Burma Theater World War II field artillery veteran Col. Paul Sharp Brown (1912-1984) as well as other items from the estate of Liesel Brown, Col. Brown’s wife.

Several pieces of antique furniture passed down through the estate of Dr. John Peters will also cross the block. Dr. Peters was a Professor of Medicine at Yale University and chief of the Metabolism Section of the Internal Medicine Department from 1922 to his death in 1955. He was considered to be the originator of the specialty of nephrology. The John P. Peters Award is awarded annually by the American Society of Nephrology, to an

individual for outstanding work in the field of nephrology. Items from his family include a walnut Pennsylvania Chippendale tall chest circa 1750-1780, a Federal butler desk circa 1800, a mahogany Empire drop leaf table and a mahogany Empire chair. These were used by Dr. John Peters as his workstation where he wrote "Body Water" and "Quantitative Clinical Chemistry". He also wrote the first half of Volume II of the revised edition of “Quantitative Clinical Chemistry” at this station and was writing the last half when he died.

George Sharp enlisted in the 155th Volunteer Pennsylvania Infantry in 1862 serving at Antietam, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg (Little Round Top), Wilderness, Cold Harbor and Spottsylvania where he was wounded. Upon recovery he was assigned to the 9th Regiment Veteran Reserve Corp in Washington D.C. where he served as one of Lincoln’s last bodyguards. Included in the sale will be his photo, his U.S. belt buckle, a Pennsylvania 155th medal, his discharge papers and his service history as certified by the Soldiers and Sailors Historical and Benevolent Society.

Items from his grandson Col. Paul Sharp Brown will include his campaign hat, photos, documents, medals, patches, Japanese soldier armbands and a Japanese flag called a hinomaru yosegaki. This is an autographed Japanese good luck flag given to a soldier by his family and friends to be carried into battle. A coin collection belonging to Brown’s wife Liesel Brown, which includes two 1909s VDB Lincoln cents, gold coins and foreign silver will be included in the sale as will a Ransom & Randolph Co. Model #40 quartersawn oak dental cabinet, circa 1900, from her estate. The net proceeds of the sale of items from the Brown estate will be divided equally and donated to the National Parkinson Foundation, the City of Hope Medical Center in Los Angeles and the Shriner’s Hospital for Children Burn Unit.

Other items in the sale include a custom made cherry sofa with buffalo hide upholstery made circa 1860-1870 by Severin & Andreas Jensen of Denmark and shipped to this country in the 1970s, an unusual mahogany and yellow pine desk with a slanted top, foot rail and cockbeaded drawers, late 19th/20th century, found in New Orleans and a 300+ piece collection of carnival glass from a Tennessee collector who worked on it for over 40 years.

Sale to feature two original Renoirs, a Manassier and a Rizzi plus twenty signed Leroy Neimans.

(Northbrook, IL) A signed lithograph of his son by Pierre-August Renoir (French 1841-1919) is one of two Renoirs that will cross the block when Universal Live Auctioneers hosts an online high end fine art auction on Friday July 9 at 3:00PM Central Time. The sale will include 275 lots of original paintings, signed lithographs, sculptures and statues representing some of the best known names in the art world. Also to be offered is an extensive selection of antique and vintage posters.

Martin Shape, President of Universal Live, described the auction as, “Far and away one of Universal’s most prestigious in its fifteen year history of conducting thousands of auctions. Opening bids have been kept competitive and there is the potential for outstanding value in this sale.”

Included in the inventory is a second Renoir signed lithograph, an oil on canvas by Alfred Manessier (French 1911-1993), five Peter Max renderings (one original), signed Warhols, a signed nude and others by Wessleman and works by Rashenburg, Jim Dine, Chagall, Miro and Dali as well as Rockwell sculptures and Pescara statues.

Shape said he believes that less than 50 final full-color renderings of Renoir’s “L'Enfant au Biscuit” Child with Biscuit were produced in 1899. Renoir outdid himself and produced what is unquestionably the artist's finest print. The colors have a pastel tonality and a delightful mat finish. Many trials must have been made before Renoir was satisfied. Some proofs exist of the drawing alone in grey-black; others have a light pink for the face. Unfinished versions were also produced in varying degrees of color. We know of only three final color stone lithographs, and this is one of those few,” Shape said. The other Renoir is “Le petit garcon au porte-plume” Little Boy with Quill Pen. In it Renoir skillfully used background shading in order to centralize the focus and the impact of his son within the composition. This intriguing portrait study of Renoir’s young son, Claude, is shown here, deep in childish thought, as he writes (or draws) with his quill pen. His gaze is that of a child's. The overall portrait is a study in concentration, beautifully rendered with thoughtful lines and form.

Just as important is the Alfred Manessier original rare early oil on canvas Sea. The scene portrays rough waters at sea, with seagulls catching the wind above. The artist also later worked in stained glass, and a hint of that can be seen in the pattern of the waves catching the light. His last work for auction was sold for $54,000 in 2007. Manessier's art today is found in some of the most prestigious private collections and museums.

Representing a “Pop Art” rendering is one of the better known artists, James Rizzi, in It's Time to Buy a New TV. He captures the excitement of shopping for a new television in this fantastic three dimensional artwork. It consists of many individual cut out pieces that were pasted on the background at varying heights, making the vibrant scene really “pop out”. The Artist deviated from his usual small renderings and produced a 26 by 36 inch image size. According to Shape it is rare to find a large Rizzi.

This will be a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to acquire vintage fire trucks and memorabilia at live public auction with no reserve.

(Pinellas Park, FL) - Bay Area Auction Services of Pinellas Park, FL will hold a no reserve sale of 132 lots from the Kids Firehouse Museum in Largo, FL on September 15, 2009.

The 9,000 square foot Museum was established in 1994 with the goal of teaching young children the basics of fire safety and prevention in an age-appropriate and fun setting with donations benefiting the “Missing Children’s Awareness Foundation.” Over the years the Museum has acquired an impressive array of firefighting equipment and accessories. The main pieces of firefighting equipment range from the oldest piece in the inventory, an 1875 hand drawn water cannon with hose reel and nozzle from the Boston Fire Department, to a 1965 Ford 1000 Gallon Pumper. The oldest truck in the Museum is a 1924 American La France Pumper with original ladders and toolbox. This chain driven venerable old fire horse last saw service in the Palmetto, FL Fire Department.

Other major pieces of equipment include a 1941 Pirsch Pumper made by Chevrolet donated by the Crestview, FL Fire Department in 1993. This was one of the few fire engines made at the beginning of World War II. It has the original wooden ladders and 113,000 brave miles. A 1950 American International L-185 was donated to the Museum in 1994 by Metal Industries of Clearwater, FL. It had been discovered sitting in a field in northern Florida. A 1951 Seagrave 400B-750 Pumper from Concord, NC comes with a 150 foot brush fire hose and foam firefighting unit along with it dual ignition, twelve cylinder power plant.

A 1954 American La France Hook and Ladder truck, last used by the Indian Rocks, FL Fire Department, has been modified by the Museum for use as workhorse capable of towing any of the other trucks in the Museum. A 1956 Ford Big Job F-750 Pumper from Live Oak, FL served double duty as both a pumper and a hook and ladder. It is fitted with four types of hoses, suction with strainer, 100 ft reel hose, 100 foot fire hose and 50 foot hydrant hose and a Hale pump. A 1956 Pirsch Pumper from Lakeland, FL can pump 1,000 gallons a minute and its 33,000 miles have been powered by a twelve cylinder motor. A 1958 American La France Pumper from Clearwater was one of the first to have an enclosed cab for the firemen’s safety while en route. A 1958 Seagrave Bullet Nose Hook & Ladder, also from Clearwater, is the biggest truck in the Museum and requires two drivers to maneuver in city streets. The sale also includes a 1966 Ford 750 BIS Tub Pumper. All trucks were in running condition when staged for Museum exhibition in 1995 with fluids drained and batteries removed per insurance requirements.

Other items in the sale inventory (many vintage) include an Atlas Life saving Jump net, a large variety of metal and cast fire truck toys, vintage fire hats, fire suits, hydrants and a large selection of vintage equipment including nozzles, alarm pulls, bells, telegraph station, patches, pins and belt buckles.

Auction Gallery of the Palm Beaches put three Spring art and antiques sales back to back to back with outstanding results.

(West Palm Beach, FL) A large ivory collection from a Miami doctor, the result of a thirty year collecting effort, provided the backbone of the June 1 and July 13 sales at Auction Gallery of the Palm Beaches in West Palm Beach, FL. Auction owner Brian Kogan reported brisk sales to numerous Asian collectors with significant online results through Artfact.com.

The June 1 Auction Gallery of the Palm Beaches Sixth Anniversary sale saw a 5 ⅝ in tall Chinese ivory pot brush carved in high relief with elders and attendants climbing rockery with plants and a giant tree, estimated at $800-$1000, close at $1,400. That was followed by a well carved large ivory Rat Zodiac, Chinese, 20th century, signed. The central seated large rat was surrounded by the rest of the figures of the zodiac in high relief. The 4⅛in tall figure, estimated at $600-$700 brought a pleasant closing bid of $1,600 and a group of four carved ivory figures, Chinese, depicting three boys and an elder, all wearing tunics and pants, mounted on wood bases, estimated at $400-$500, sold for $1,500.

From the same collection in the July 13 sale, a fine pair of carved ivory birds, Chinese, late 19th century, with well detailed birds perched on a pine tree branch, 7⅝in H, with carved wood stands brought $2,880, a well carved ivory figure of Shan Lao, Chinese, 19th Century, the immortal with elongated head and flowing beard, wearing a long robe, holding a gnarled staff and a peach, flanked by a crane, made $2,150 and a fine ivory concentric ball and stand, Chinese circa 1850, containing approximately twelve inner loose balls with pierced trellis design, supported by the stand with a standing boy holding a peach below also sold for $2,150.

In the art category the big lot of the April sale was a pair of works by Joseph Groupy (French. 1689-1769), the "Sacrifice of Lystra" and "The Charge to Saint Peter", after Raphael's Tapestry Cartoons, gouache on vellum laid down, each measuring 8¼ by 12¾in, framed. Estimated at $1,000-$1,500 the pair sold for $4,750. In the June sale the top art lot was a Royal Berlin (KPM) porcelain plaque, German, late 19th Century, impressed KPM, scepter mark and "H," of a young beauty in an interior wearing a red dress feeding birds perched on a rod. The 19 by 11½in plaque in a gilt frame sold for $12,000 to a dealer from Dade County, FL. It was followed by a pair of oil on board works called “Venetian Views” by Edward Pritchett (English. 1828-1864), each measuring 7 by 8½in. The pair brought $8,500. The July 13 event boasted an abstarct work by Earl Reiback (American 1948-2006) called “Looking Glass,” a 33¾in circular infinity mirror originally acquired directly from the artist. Estimated at $600-$800, it sold for a surprising bid of $3,600.

But the big hitter of all three sales resulted from a cold call to the Gallery prior to the April sale. A lady wanted to be sure she had the right opinion on her diamond ring. Auction owner Kogan invited the caller to visit the gallery and meet with a gemologist who identified it as a pear shaped diamond in a platinum ring weighing approximately 12.40 carats, J-K color, SI 1 clarity, flanked by two baquettes weighing approximately 1.30 carats of G-H color and VS clarity. Satisfied the lady consigned the ring for sale in the April auction. On sale day a local phone bidder outlasted three other phone bidders and two gallery bidders with the winning bid of $75,000, within the original estimate. Kogan said “Big stone with a big price in hard times. Go figure.”

Aberdeen Auction Galleries of St. Petersburg, FL achieved excellent results in the March 14 online sale of European art.

(St. Petersburg, FL) – Aberdeen Auction Galleries had 118 registered bidders with LiveAuctioneers.com and another 45 registered inhouse for its online/absentee/phone sale of March 14. Auction owner Alex Turchack had assembled an inventory of 388 lots of European art, antiques and money to offer the bidders.

The top lot of the sale was a 19½ by 24in oil on canvas signed by Alexei Petrovich Bogolubov (Russian, 1824-1896). In the frame the work, entitled “Night Seascape,” measured 24½ by 28½in. After joining the Russian Navy Bogolubov attended the St Petersburg Academy of Art and became a noted landscape painter by mid century. He traveled widely in Europe settling in Paris in 1873. When he died in 1896 he left his entire fortune, around six million US dollars, to the Russian Museum and its painting school in St. Petersburg. The school was then named in his honor. This seascape, estimated at $5/8,000, sold for $12,330 including the 17.5 percent buyer’s premium, to a Massachusetts collector bidding through LiveAuctioneers.com.

Another oil on canvas, a winter scene with skaters by Morel Jan Evert Sr the Elder(Dutch 1766-1808), sold for $2,360. The 6 by 8in canvas was enclosed in an ornate 14 by 16in frame.

Two German lots invoked great interest. One was a late 17th - early 18th c. German silver and ivory tankard. The ivory body was deeply carved with a mythological scene. The scroliate silver base bears the town mark (two crossed swords) and the maker's mark ZI (or IZ) in a rectangle. The 10½in high piece bore two more marks, a moon and a cat. It garnered over thirty bids before closing at $11,163 including premium. A pair of early German pistols attracted attention. A pair of Kuchex Ruter pistols, 1716-1758, with brass furniture and refitted percussion cap ignitions, brought a winner of $4,817 on the phone. Also of interest was a document signed by Russian Tsar Pavel I (1754-1801) only six days after ascending the throne. Dated November 18, 1796, the document puts Colonel Fedor Shavrs in charge of building the new Mikhailivsky Palace in St. Petersburg. The one page document, framed with a photo of the completed Palace, 19¼ by 12¾in, sold to an online bidder for $2,068.

Twenty lots of international paper monetary notes., mostly European, late 19th century and early 20th century, sold within estimate form $100 to $500 and four Russian gold coins also sold in estimate in the $550 to $1,000 range.
